Two alumni of IIT Kanpur have contributed immensely to the country’s first Medical Research and Technology School (SMRT) being built here. Dr. Dev Zoneja has given 2.5 million dollars (about 19 crores) and Hemant Jalan Rs 18 crores to the institute for the construction of SMRT. It is these two students have also been included in the advisory board of SMRT.

Let us tell you that IIT Kanpur will be the first such technical institute in the country where SMRT is being established. Here engineering and medical studies and research will be done together. Along with this, a 500-bed super specialist hospital will also be built.

For this school, Dr. Dev Zoneja has given Terry Musone and Dev Zoneja $2.5 million as gifts and Hemant Jalan Rs 18 crore for the infrastructure development of the school. Director of the institute Prof Abhay Karandikar said that the alumni are constantly ready for the development of the institute. They are continuously helping and giving the institute worldwide recognition. Dr. Dev has done B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1984. He is currently the Chief Risk Officer at Exodus Point Capital Management. He has also contributed to the creation of 3 Faculty Chairs and community welfare initiatives in the Institute in the past. Hemant Jalan did his BTech in Chemical Engineering in 1977. He is the founder of Indigo Paints. This company currently ranks fourth paint manufacturer in the country.
Engineering department and biomedical experts will do research
In the first phase, a state-of-the-art medical research institute with a 500-bed super specialty hospital will be set up in the institute. The engineering department and biomedical specialists in this school will conduct research and provide post graduate medical degrees in various domains to the students.
