New Delhi: Former India hockey captain and member of the 1998 Asian Games gold medal winning team Dilip Tirkey was on Friday elected as the President of Hockey India. The special thing is that Tirkey’s election has been unopposed. With the withdrawal of nominations of both the candidates who had filed nominations for Hockey India, the way has been cleared for Dilip Tirkey to become the President of Hockey India.
Dilip Tirkey, along with being the former hockey captain of India, has also registered a special record in his name. He was the player to play the most matches in international hockey. He played 412 matches in his 15 year long career. The 44-year-old from Odisha represented India at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Dilip Tirkey filed his nomination on September 18 for the post of Hockey India President. He expressed happiness by tweeting after winning the election. At the same time, he promised to take Indian hockey to new heights.
