The researchers compared the optimal diet for longevity with the typical Western diet, which included mostly processed foods, red meat, high-fat dairy products, high-sugar foods, packaged foods, and fewer fruits and vegetables. According to their research, an optimal diet consisted of more legumes (beans, peas and lentils), whole grains (oats, barley and brown rice), nuts, less red meat.
Researchers found in this research that if the optimal diet is eaten from the age of 20, then the life expectancy of women and men in China, America and Europe will increase by more than a decade. They also found that switching from the Western Diet to the Optimal Diet at age 60 would increase life expectancy by eight years. Not only this, life expectancy in those who are 80 years old can increase by about three and a half years.
However, it is not yet completely clear how diets can improve life span. But the Optimal Diet, which the researchers of this study talked about, includes many such foods, which are rich in antioxidants. Some other research on human cells shows that these foods can slow cell damage, which is one of the causes of aging.
