The second Test of the three-match series between India and South Africa is being played at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Team India won the toss and KL Rahul, captaining in the absence of Virat Kohli, decided to bat first. As soon as he became the captain in the second Test, Rahul has made a big achievement in his name. With this, Rahul has joined the special club along with former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin and Sunil Gavaskar.
Regular captain Virat Kohli is not playing the second Test due to a back problem. He can be seen recovering soon and playing in the third Test. In the absence of Virat, Rahul has been made the captain of the Indian team for the second Test. Rahul was made the vice-captain of the Test team after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the Test series. But now after Virat’s exit, he has been given the command of the team in the Johannesburg Test. This is the first time that Rahul is captaining the Indian team in any format. After the Test match, Rahul will also captain the three-match ODI series, which will be played from January 19. Due to Rohit’s not fully fit, Rahul has been given the captaincy of the ODI team.
As captain, Rahul became the first Indian captain since Azharuddin in 1990 to captain the Indian team in a Test match before becoming the captain in limited overs. Sunil Gavaskar, BS Bedi, Ajit Wadekar have achieved this feat before him. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Rahul said, “It is the dream of every Indian player to captain his country. It is indeed an honor for me to captain the team. We have had some good wins here and hopefully we will continue to do so.
