Helen New Delhi. The corona vaccine is being administered to children between the ages of 15 and 18 from January 3. So far, about 40 lakh children have been vaccinated. But some people say that teenagers are being given the vaccine with expiry date. Currently, the Covaxin vaccine is being administered to adolescents. The ministry has given an explanation regarding this matter. The ministry has said that this is a complete rumor and false things are being spread on the basis of incomplete information. The ministry has clarified that the shelf life of Covaxin has been extended till November after investigation by regulatory agencies. This vaccine is as effective as any other vaccine. Currently, Covaccin is the only vaccine in India that is being administered to adolescents.
Is Vaccine Really With Expiry Date?
Children are currently being given Covaxin. Bharat Biotech, the manufacturer of this vaccine, had applied for it. On October 25, 2021, regulatory body CDSCO (Central Drug Standard Control Organisation) approved the extension of the shelf life of the indigenously developed vaccine from 9 to 12 months from the date of its manufacture. After the shelf life is extended, hospitals can use vaccines that are expiring and which can be wasted. There are 100 million people in the 15-18 age group who would need 200 million doses to be fully vaccinated.
Why is the shelf life of the vaccine extended?
A vaccine is a complex mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, inactivated or helper viruses. Whose job is to increase the immune response and the ability of the vaccine. Like other products and medicines, vaccines also have an expiry date. Which is decided by the manufacturers and official regulators. Due to the slow chemical process, the components of the vaccine deteriorate over time and lose their effect. According to the World Health Organization, stability is the ability of any vaccine to maintain its chemical, physical and microbial and biological potential. On the basis of all these components, the self-life of the vaccine was increased.
How is Shelf Life Measured?
The shelf life is checked by keeping the product at different temperatures for different periods of time. The period for which the product remains effective and stable under certain conditions is considered as its shelf life. At the same time, according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization, the shelf life of a vaccine is the period during which it does not spoil if stored properly. Accordingly, the expiry date is written on the vaccine. The special thing is that the expiry date does not affect the safety of the vaccine, it simply reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine.
