Artists of Jharkhand presented the play Kanyadan in the two-day long Hunar Mahotsav in Azamgarh district. As the first performance, the play ‘Kanyadaan’ under the direction of Mohammad Nizam was staged by the artists of Path, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The Hindi translation of this play written by Vijay Tendulkar has been done by Basant Dev. The caste discrimination spread in the society was attacked through drama. It was shown through the staging that people talk idealistic things, but when it comes to cooperating, they seem to hold back. It was shown in the play that even after such a long time of independence, caste-varna discrimination has not ended in the society. Theater artist Sunil Vishwakarma says that the inequalities of society are shown through these plays.
Jyoti falls in love with a Dalit youth
The play begins with Nath Devlalikar, a socialist activist. His daughter Jyoti falls in love with a Dalit youth, Arun Athwale. She proposes marriage to the family. Devlalikar accepts this. Jyoti’s mother Seva Mukherjee does not like this thing. She is a social worker but does not want to accept the change in the family. A conflict begins between the two ideologies. On one hand, she talks about change in society, but stands against the marriage of a daughter to a Dalit youth.
Daughter follows father’s ideals
A few days after Jyoti and Arun’s wedding, their fight starts. He starts beating her under the influence of alcohol. He gets caste discrimination in his mind. She leaves her husband’s house and comes to her father’s house. At the same time, Arun calls Jyoti’s father as the chairman for the release of a book. During this he gives a speech which is reviewed by his daughter, after which she goes back to Arun. The play Charandas Chor was staged. In this play written by celebrated playwright Habib Tanveer, Charandas, a petty thief, is dissatisfied with his life and is on the run from life. Eventually, he meets a guru who gives him a vow that will set him free.
