New Delhi. According to the big news of the morning, the Ahmedabad Metro Police Court on Friday sentenced Gujarat Congress Working Committee President and MLA Jignesh Mevani to 6 months in jail. In fact, in a case of 2016, he and 18 other people along with him have been given the same punishment.
It is worth mentioning that in 2016, Mevani and Dalit rights groups had organized a massive demonstration to change the name of Gujarat University’s law building. In this regard, their demand was that the building should be named after BR Ambedkar.
In this case, the Metropolitan Magistrate has imposed three different sentences under three different sections of the IPC – one under six months’ jail, the second a fine of Rs 500 and the third a fine of Rs 100.
It is to be known that earlier also Jignesh Mevani was arrested by Assam Police from Palanpur in Gujarat for making derogatory tweets against PM Narendra Modi. However, later the Assam court also granted him bail.
Let us know that the prominent Dalit leader Mevani had also won the 2017 assembly elections as an independent candidate with the support of the Congress. Subsequently, the Congress also made him the working president of its Gujarat unit. At present, the sword of going to jail is hanging on this Mevani.
