On Friday, Muslim League leader ET Mohammad Bashir, while presenting an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, said that this decision of the central government is against the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and the government will implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country. (Uniform Civil Code) is taking another step towards implementation. Bashir said that we are against this decision and will oppose it.
Mohammad Bashir accused the central government that Uniform Civil Code is a major agenda of the Sangh Parivar and the government is trying to implement this agenda by increasing the age of marriage. He said that the Muslim Personal Law Board defines marriage, divorce and property rights in the Muslim community and all these issues are related to our faith.
Bashir said that the main opposition Congress has not yet clarified its stand on the matter and he will talk to other political parties to reach a consensus on the issue.
The Union Cabinet in its meeting on Wednesday approved the proposal and the government plans to bring the bill in the ongoing winter session of Parliament – which will bring the minimum age of marriage for women at par with that of men. Sunni community organization Jamaat-ul-Ulema and many other religious organizations have protested the Centre’s decision.
On the other hand, women’s organizations of Muslim League have also expressed their displeasure over the decision to increase the age of marriage. Women said that delaying marriage can increase problems like live-in relationships and illicit relationships.
TK Ashraf, leader of the Salafi group Wisdom Islamic Organization, said there was no major need to raise the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. If a girl turns 18, then no medical study indicates any psychological or physical problem. He said that putting the condition of 21 years of age for marriage in front of girls, it is completely a violation of personal liberty and religious belief.
