Mumbai: Questions have arisen regarding the usefulness of Skywalks built at many places in Mumbai MMR by spending hundreds of crores of rupees. It is to be mentioned that the Skywalk project was started through MMRDA to facilitate pedestrians from station or road. The first skywalk was built in 2008 from Bandra East to Kalanagar. Which is now in ruins.
A total of 36 skywalks have been built around stations in Mumbai. Of these 28 skywalks have been constructed by MMRDA and 8 will be built through MSRDC. It was told that MMRDA spent about Rs 700 crore in making the skywalk, not only this, but crores of rupees were given for annual maintenance. Most of these skywalks are not being used today. Initially, the skywalk projects were opposed by local residents and shopkeepers at many places.
question on quality
In the previous government, the then cabinet and guardian minister of the state Aslam Sheikh had written a letter to the Chief Minister demanding a review of the works of the skywalk. Questions have also been raised about the construction quality of the Skywalk. The cobs on the skywalk, the paver blocks are worn out, the iron girders are rusted. There are plans to rebuild some of the skywalks.
Skywalks were built from South Mumbai to Vasai-Virar, Thane Kalyan, Badlapur, Navi Mumbai. These are being used in some places, while many skywalks have become dens of drug peddlers and anti-social elements. Animals roam on them. Officials say that MMRDA built the skywalk with good intentions, but the project was not that successful. At many places, they had to be removed due to metro or other infra works. BMC’s plan to build a skywalk on Poddar Road in Malad (E) was put on hold. Thieves took away the iron of the skywalk in Bandra East. The skywalk built in Thane East was of no use.
white elephant proved
There has also been talk of a study by IIT-Bombay or VJTI on the feasibility of the skywalk being built in Mumbai. The skywalk built in Borivali by spending crores of rupees is not being used. It is discussed that many skywalks in Mumbai proved to be white elephants and crores of rupees of MMRDA and BMC were submerged in water. All the skywalks in Mumbai were transferred by MMRDA to BMC for maintenance. The responsibility of maintenance and repair of the skywalk has been given to the concerned Municipal Corporation.
