SP candidate Rafiq Ansari won the Meerut city seat for the second time in a row.
Samajwadi Party candidate Rafiq Ansari has registered victory in Meerut city assembly seat. In the Modi wave of 2017, Meerut city seat was the only seat in the seven assembly seats of Meerut on which SP had won. SP candidate Rafiq Ansari had defeated BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai in the city seat in 2017. Rafiq Ansari has retained that victory in the 2022 elections as well. Rafiq has defeated BJP candidate Kamal Dutt Sharma.

In 2017, a total of 52.79 percent votes were cast in Meerut. In 2017, Rafiq Ansari from Samajwadi Party defeated Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai of Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 28769 votes. Whereas in 2012, Rafiq Ansari was defeated by BJP’s Laxmikant Vajpayee in the same seat. In 2017, Rafiq avenged this defeat.
Congress’s defeat even after contesting the most expensive election
Congress candidate councilor Ranjan Sharma contested the most expensive election in Meerut city seat, even after this Ranjan could not get votes. Ranjan spent more than 19 lakh rupees in the election but the votes got the least. Congress candidate and Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sharma has been at number three in taking votes. Ranjan got only 2,611 votes. Rafiq Ansari has won by taking 73,649 votes. BJP’s Kamal Dutt Sharma has got 50,019 votes.
