After this order of the state government, all the facilities available to the blacksmith caste under the ST category will be canceled. Lohar caste will no longer get the facilities of Scheduled Tribes in Bihar.
An order has been issued by the General Administration Department of Bihar to remove the Lohar caste from the Scheduled Tribe category. Following the order of the Supreme Court, the facilities of the Scheduled Tribes given to the Lohar caste by the General Administration Department have been canceled with immediate effect. In this regard, a letter has been written by the General Administration Department to all the departments as well as to the Divisional Commissioner, District Magistrate and various commission and office heads. In Bihar, the Lohar caste was removed from the category of extremely backward class in the year 2016 and given the status of Scheduled Tribe. Along with issuing the Scheduled Tribe certificate to the blacksmith caste, an order was issued to provide all other facilities as well.

Challenging the decision of the state government in the Supreme Court
The decision of the state government to remove the Lohar caste from the category of extremely backward class and include it in the ST category was challenged in the Supreme Court. In the case of Sunil Kumar & Ors vs State Government & Ors, the Supreme Court had delivered its judgment on 21 February 2022. The top court set aside the 2016 order of the state government. In the order of the state government, the Lohar caste was being given the facilities of the Scheduled Tribe category. Now these facilities have been canceled.

According to the latest decision of the General Administration Department, the Lohar caste will now be given the same facilities as other castes that come under the Other Backward Classes. After the order of the General Administration Department, all the certificates issued under the Scheduled Tribes of the people of the blacksmith caste have become invalid. Along with this, all the facilities available to them have also been banned. Now the Lohar caste has joined the Annexure Forest like other backward castes.
