These tribal women are now earning thousands by doing collective farming. The fields which were barren due to lack of irrigation facilities are now flourishing with lemon plants and fruits on the strength of these women. The lemon here goes to the mandis of Bihar Sharif, Patna, Ranchi and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand apart from Bihar.
Dhanmatari is a village with a population of about 700. This is a tribal dominated area. The people here were away from agriculture till now, for the family, men go to other states to work as laborers and women also used to work as laborers. But the women of 12 families took inspiration and decided to make their barren land fertile. Then these women worked hard to make the land fertile and planted lemon, guava plants four years ago.
The women of this village had planted lemon barley saplings on about one and a half acres of land, now they are laden with fruits. In the month of January-February, these women earned 6 to 7 thousand, now when the price of lemon has increased, their earnings will triple in May-June. These women who became farmers leaving wages are proud that they have set an example. Kaushalya Devi, Geeta Devi and Manju Devi say that the land was barren. There was no irrigation facility. By adopting collective farming, by getting boring done, first he did irrigation and then started farming by making barren land fertile. Now earning income. She says that now that the price of lemons has gone up, she hopes that the income in her pocket will increase in the next season.
